a journey to peru > getting started

On 1st July 2007 I embark on a 3-month journey to Peru. I am taking place in a community service project organised through an Australian-based not-for-profit, non-religious, non-political organisation called World Youth International (WYI). WYI is an organisation whose focus is on the children, whose aim is to bring love, joy and support to kids in developing countries. WYI provides its volunteers with support and hostel accommodation in their desired location (Kenya, Nepal, Peru and China) whilst their volunteers share their skills and love with these communities and children of the world!

I have elected to volunteer in the street kids program and to also assist in one of the many orphanages and schools located in the city of Cuzco.

The program is not without a fee and costs $3,845 (airfare excluded!). However, the majority of WYI’s funding comes from their volunteers undertaking such programs. The breakdown is as follows:

  • set up and running costs in Peru – 53%
  • overseas travel and International Development Projects – 5%
  • Australian administration costs – 39.5%
  • ‘The Next Step’ leadership and personal development training – 2.5%

Over the coming months I will begin fundraising activities to assist in paying the program fee. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
